Melissa Balderamos Mahler



Melissa comes from a family of legal minds, the most notable being her father, Lawrence Randolph Balderamos, former Magistrate and Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, and one of the founding members of the Law Firm of Musa & Balderamos.

Melissa obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Summa Cum Laude) from St. Leo University in 1995 with a major in Sociology and was elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. In 2000, she obtained a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.) with First Class Honours from the University of the West Indies. In 2002, she obtained the Legal Education Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and shared in the Arthur Scholefield Memorial Prize and the Beresford Hay Prize. She obtained a Certificate in Intellectual Property in 2003 from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Melissa joined the Law Firm of Musa and Balderamos in September 2002, where she remained until June of 2014. While there, she undertook the strengthening and expansion of the firm’s intellectual property portfolio, with extensive work in registration, protection, and enforcement of clients’ intellectual property rights. She has worked closely with the Customs Department in the seizure and destruction of counterfeit goods and anti-counterfeit efforts. Melissa has also amassed considerable experience in commercial and banking law, conveyancing and real estate transactions and development, and estates and succession, and has engaged in complex litigation involving real property issues and contentious estate issues. Melissa has also represented clients in family matters and matrimonial disputes, has advised and assisted in the settlement of countless family disputes, and she has garnered experience in local and inter-country adoptions, including inter-country adoptions under the Hague Convention. Melissa has argued before the Belize Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Melissa became a partner in the Law Firm of Musa & Balderamos in 2013.

Melissa has served as Treasurer, Secretary, and Executive Committee member of the Bar Association of Belize, member of the Valuation Appeals Board, Chairperson of the Belize Broadcasting Authority, member of the National Women’s Commission, member of the Integrity Commission, member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Community Resource Development (CCRD), and member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Belize.
